Watch Out for Email Change Scams Targeting Your Trademark

Scammers are targeting trademark owners by filing unauthorized requests to change the email address in USPTO records. Why? Because some e-commerce platforms—like Amazon—require trademark owners to verify their mark through a brand registry. When that happens, a verification code is sent to the email on file with the USPTO.

If scammers change your email without permission, they can intercept that code and attempt to falsely claim ownership of your trademark.

Here’s how to protect your trademark:

  • Pay attention to USPTO alerts. You’ll receive an email from TEAS@uspto.gov anytime there’s a request to change your email address. If you didn’t request the change, reply right away and let the USPTO know it was unauthorized.
  • Monitor your trademark record. Use your USPTO.gov account to set up a customer docket and alerts for updates on your application or registration. Or consider hiring our monitoring services, which keeps you up-to-date on any status changes as well as monitoring for potential infringers.
  • Check TSDR regularly. This is your official source to confirm your trademark details are accurate and current.
