Small business is about keeping everything in balance. Costs controlled. Sales maximized. Income over outgo.

What could go wrong?

Well, actually – everything. When you have a good idea, the good days will cover the mistakes, over and over again.

Sometimes barely. Hit a bad stretch – just 7 days, 2 weeks a month – adios everything.

After all, the underappreciated risk is the everyday operating expenses to be in business each and every day. Sure, there are great days to pay for the bad days, but if you have a dry spell, too long of a dry spell, any business could be out of business.

How long of a dry spell stretch can your business tolerate?

Then in 2010, the “low fee” trademark scammers came along, namely Trademarkia with their negligent $169 trademark application only services, even though they were attorneys. When someone demanded they do their trademark right, they’d outsource to us for the needed in the first-place comprehensive clearance legal research. The trend continued into unethical attorneys, then the last 4 years the wave of hundreds of foreign outright criminal fraudster bad actors.

Across the street from our office, there is a great top 100 epicurean restaurant named Chef Chu’s.

In 1970, 26 year old Lawrence Chu, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chef_Chu%27s), wanted to open “a fast food Chinese joint in every corner of America”. But his 20-year old girlfriend and future wife Natalie Chan disagreed. She said, “that sounds so terrific, that if he found one good location, and opened one restaurant, she would join him. He said he’s followed her advice ever since”.

A quote I especially like is, “I saw my dad and my mom work their butts off in the kitchen, out in the front. I saw many sides to it. There was the side that no one saw, which is the grind, the de-boning the chicken, getting the deliveries in the back, my grandma doing the books with her abacus”, as Lawrence’s famous son Jon Chu the director of Crazy Rich Asians remembered.

IF Lawrence Chu had chosen to trademark his restaurant name CHEF CHU’S are drawn to SECURE MARK USA initial $49 “low fee” offer, he may not have lasted through a “dry spell”.

The SECURE MARK USA initial $49 “low fee”, soon ballooned, as they demanded more and more FAKE FEES, finally adding up to $6,999.

$6,999 in wasted $ can wipe out a business. Any business. A loss of $6,999 is enough to make a business owner to never want to start another business. It’s enough to sour the business owner’s friends and family ever wanting to start their own business. Chilling.

Chef Chu’s is a beautiful business success story. I have frequented Chef Chu’s for 33 years now. I know Lawrence Chu and his son Larry Chu, who runs the restaurant today. I have seen how hard they work and the dedication of their untiring staff. Impressive. Admirable. Every time I have been there. Their epicurean cuisine is incredible.

Come to think of it, Chef Chu’s is the place where my 3 kids first learned to sit up and use chopsticks correctly. Another kid’s adventure!
